If you're in Boston, Miles Standish State Forrest is a wooded area. Sounds like just you and the wife (no kids). The outer Cape beaches are nice (National Seashore), but unless you get there early, they may be closed.
If you want a nice coastal route, I suggest RT 1 in Maine.
Also, for your trip to Boston, rather than driving the MassPike, I suggest a detour though NH. It's indirect, out of the way as a matter of fact, but fun mountain roads.
Good luck and have a fun trip.
