Jeep Liberty KJ AC issues, advice?

Long story, medium...
2005 Jeep Liberty KJ CRD (diesel). AC worked fine until I slid downhill into a pole at ~5 MPH last winter when pulling into the parking garage at my office.
Finally had the repair done in June. I told the shop about he inoperative AC, they checked everything but couldn't find any issues. They did, however, replace the condenser cooling fan as its frame had cracked in the collision. When I picked up the Jeep the AC worked wonderfully -- for less than a week. I figured a broken fan caused the issue. Now it hasn't been working at all.
The orange light on the CC illuminates when I push the AC button, but the compressor does not engage. I checked the fuses and relays - nothing. I jumpered the low pressure switch on the dryer/collector - nothing. While the compressor clutch does not engage, it spins freely in both directions with some viscous resistance. The electrical connections to the compressor are not easily accessible, otherwise I would have tested voltage there.
Based on the short-lived perfect cooling I feel like it is a fault in the system versus a major component failure. Any idea what it could be or where to look before I bring it in to the shop?
