Just read about Nissan/Infinity new variable compression engine https://www.infinitiusa.com/about/technology/vc-turbo-engine.html and remembered about Saab toying with the same idea years ago http://www.spannerhead.com/2013/03/13/interesting-engines-saabs-variable-compression-engine/- although Saab never moved beyond a prototype stage. Not sure if the this technology would take off. It seem to be overly complicated with no particular gains over traditional engine. The only advantage I can see is that the engine runs on a regular fuel.
