The MIS Racetrack was only 10 miles from my parent's home when I was a teenager. A number of local civic groups were 'hired' to perform specific functions needed on race day and qualifying day.
My older sister's Girl Scout group was paid to clean the Infields and/or Grandstands following races. All family members were encouraged to help (needed to help!) and we were allowed entrance to the site after the race was 1/4 complete. I met AJ Foyt and Roger Penske when picking up trash around their feet following races. Foyt in Pit Row and Penske leaving the luxury suites atop the Grand Stand.
My boss at the local Drug Store was a member of the Kiwanis, and the Kiwanis group was paid to sell tickets to the infield at the Turn #1 Tunnel. Volunteering to help the Kiwanis got me in even earlier!
