lots of CUVs are now turbo4's or hybrids both of which improve fuel efficiency vs suvs of the past (along with engine management and gearing aimed at optimizing fuel use)
That said, vehicle mass, aerodynamics, and driving habits greatly affect fuel efficiency, and larger heavier vehicles with greater frontal area are going to require more energy to accelerate rapidly...
At the same time, I am reminded of the impact on fuel economy of throwing 3-4 bikes on our 9-5 sedan. Put all that stuff inside a van, SUV, or at least in the wake of a larger vehicle on a hitch rack and your fuel economy may be no worse, and probably better... so having the right vehicle for your needs is probably most important (eg that sedan isn't dragging bikes all the time so it saves fuel except in those situations where an SUV or van would use the same fuel all the time more or less).
Buick is meh. If they are not a success, that is probably why.
