That brings to mind the great Minscribe drive debacle of the 80s, I knew a gal who worked in shipping there and she was told to pack bricks or get laid off - which happened anyways.
Then Maxtor bought miniscribe, who hired a bunch of ex DEC guys when DEC got out of the disk drive biz. I was friend with a DEC guy who was responsible for qualifying disk drives - one of his best friends was at Maxtor , responsible for sales to companies using disk drives. My friend in qualification said the Maxtor drives were garbage, couldn't come close to passing durability tests, eventually Seagate bought out Maxtor and now Seagate is struggling.
Stories from the disk drive biz, I eventually found my way to Net App in their growth days and pulled out a lot of $$.
