OT - PayPal creepiness Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Tue, 22 Jan 2019 19:42:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
[BEGIN RANT]
I know that mine is a minority opinion, but I really detest PayPal. At least in my case when I've had any kind of problem it's like dealing with a government agency - the company is dense, bureaucratic, inflexible, and generally just doesn't give a damn.
I don't use PayPal very much so when the credit card they have on file for me reached expiration I hadn't bothered to update it. I figured on doing it next time I used the service which might not be for months.
However, I just got a creepy email from PayPal that at first I thought might have been a phishing attempt. With the subject line "We updated your card's expiration date," the message informed me: "We updated the expiration date for your [credit card]. We did this to make sure the card is ready to use when you need it." I never follow links in such emails so manually logged into my account and found that they had indeed done this.
WTF??? The idea that a 3rd party like PayPal can just blithely obtain and update my credit card information without even asking and without my prior knowledge or consent doesn't exactly engender a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. Frankly if I didn't need to use it once in a while (mainly to pay for Saabnet membership and buy parts from Saabnet vendors) I'd just cancel my PayPal account and be done with it.
(Another annoyance - every time I log in they keep trying to get me to give them a mobile number where they can text me. I don't have a smartphone and cannot receive texts. I also can't find a way to turn that popup off and, surprise, when I emailed their support regarding this issue there was no response.)
