I have no doubt at this point that the "10MB" card is actually 4MB. Aside from the small Card Writer utility failing and MCE stating it's 4MB, I also attempted to use TIS2000 to write the card and it complained the size wasn't supported.
I'm now writing the original 32MB card with the upsized V44 binary using the Card Writer method and it appears to be working, at least it is showing progress. (Went through the card wipe process quickly and is now uploading data. ADDENDUM: The write finished successfully after about 30 minutes. Photo added to original post.)
I've ordered another Saab card and a GM card (for the heck of it) from chinacardiags.com. The price on their 32MB cards is not all that much higher than my "bargain" card, which is being returned. (Rambler Mentality strikes again!)
The Tech2 clone seems to be reasonably well made. The only minor negatives I'm seeing so far are that the folding stand is a bit loose and the PCMCIA slots are very tight. A blunt instrument is needed to push the eject buttons and cards are difficult to extract. Also it's a bit tough to install adapters on the main cable due to tight fit. An annoyance is the AC adapter supplied has very short cords. (It appears to be a bog-standard 12V adapter with a commonly-used DC plug. Should be no problem to use another one that's more convenient.)
Now I'll just have to learn how to use this thing, which is another kettle of fish. I know there are youtube videos and lots of info in and around the internet.
