Autosocks are the neatest option , and they work really well . I also use traditional cable chains , they are very reliable . My best advice is to practice putting on whatever device you choose , in the safety and comfort of your driveway. watch some videos for tips . The worst case scenario is you are trying to read the how to instructions in a snowstorm . Chains can cause plenty of damage if installed wrong . Big time safety issue .
My car gets chained up regularly , as the DOT requires 4wd or chains , at times in the Mountain Passes of the Rockies and Cascades . It really isn't something anyone can enjoy , and you have to stay under 30 mph . But it can get you to safer roads or a rest area . Then you have to take them off after use , don't let them freeze on the tires ! After use , take them inside and rinse them and dry them and inspect and spray with some wd-40 and store them for next time .
The other needed item is a small multi bungee cord that helps keep the traction device tight ,really helps . Be safe !
