Loving my new Blizzaks!

So I thought I could get one more season out of my almost 6 year old Continental winter tires (I really wanted to since I am likely to be selling my 9-5 soon so didn't want to buy new tires right now). However, having recently moved to Northern Michigan, where we get a fair amount of the white stuff, and living at the bottom of a very steep hill (22% grade according to my neighbor's Garmin), it proved to be wishful thinking. Having got stuck one day in November (when my wife's 9-5 with newer Conti's had no problems) I made an appointment at Costco and got new Bridgestone Blizzaks for $455 installed.
My neighbor came down our hill this afternoon in his Prius but then couldn't get out again - we have a couple of inches of fresh snow on some already icy roads. He asked if he could leave his car in my driveway until the plow came, and I offered to give him a ride home. He was skeptical that I would make it up the hill, since he has snow tires on his Prius and didn't even get halfway up. But we sailed up there with no problems at all. I just took a look at the tires on his car and the one I looked at has a date stamp of early 2013, so I am thinking that's his problem. or maybe it's just that the Swedes make better winter cars than the Japanese.
Anyway, with the 120"+ of snow we get each year and the 22% grade I need to negotiate every day I was assuming an AWD car would be in my future. But so far the old 9-5 has handled the snow perfectly, so maybe that's not necessarily the case.
