I'll throw this out there (and duck): it is possible to get a very good paint job at a franchised paint shop like Maaco - especially if you do the prep work yourself. They are typically franchises, so some locations do a great job, some don't - look at some of their recent prior work and decide. They offer different grades of paint (don't get the cheapest ones) and may allow you to supply your own paint, again depending on the local franchisee.
The key: a shop like this paints a lot more cars than a typical body shop, typically several per day, meaning that they know how to mix, dilute and apply paint without runs, orange peel, fisheyes, etc. and paint is not a secondary business for them after body repairs.
I was a complete skeptic of this idea, but a fellow Volvo 1800 owner had his car painted at his local Maaco, while I had mine painted by an inexpensive local body shop. His came out much nicer than mine, none of the aforementioned defects. Again, this will absolutely vary by the actual shop in question.
