What sort of light are you looking at, and how much are you considering spending?
The solar "path lights" have a small battery and a photocell. They charge during the day and turn on at night.
seems like for workbench lights you'd want something fairly high intensity?
How about a small 12v batt, a small solar panel appropriate size on the roof, a simple PWM controller and then use the 12v LED lighting of your choice inside and outside. Can size the batt and panel based on the lighting that you want.
might be more than you want to get into ... but it would be a fun project.
