Not sure about other brands but Toyota/Lexus are quite DIY friendly. For $20 you can get the same diagnostic cable and software that dealership uses that gives use full control of the car. For $70 you can get the full service manual. The engine compartment is usually less cramped compared to the Germans.
The only problem is that these cars don't seem to be break much so you don't get much chance to use these toys. I put 7 years 120k on my Lexus 300h and the only repair was a sunroof seal replacement.
