My 13 year old wanted his first board this summer, and parts were in low supply with COVID19 related production shortages. We ended up getting a deck he loved on-line, and the wheels/bearings/trucks/hardware at a local shop.
My recommendation would be first to visit your local skateboard shop. This way he can try the different sizes and shapes, look at what wheels might be best for his use, and pick a design he likes. And he's supporting a the local skate shop - always a good thing.
If there are none in the area, look online at shops that carry a wide selection of brands, shapes, and sizes. Once example is CCS.
