Insurance Renewal Cost / Mileage Based Posted by EGD [Email] (#663) [Profile/Gallery] (more from EGD) on Fri, 8 Jan 2021 06:58:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Called my insurer yesterday — Auto Club of SoCal — to ask why I did not receive an annual survey of miles driven as I have for as long as I can remember. Their pricing is partially based on the number of miles each car is driven during the year.
It turns out that ACSC did not send out these surveys this year because most of their insured are now driving fewer miles (covid lockdowns, working from home so no commutes, etc.). Instead, they will be basing their premiums on miles driven in prior years!
In my case, my wife and I put on about 60K miles over four cars in 2019 — most of that on our two Volvo S60s; much less on our Saabs — and the premiums I paid in 2020 were based on those 60K miles driven in 2019. That high amount of miles driven in 2019 was to carry over to my 2021 premiums but, since we both are WFH now, our total annual miles driven is less than 20K.
Anyway, I have to proactively report the much lower miles driven to ACSC today to get a lower premium as they will not ask for them this year. You might be getting overcharged, as well, so it might pay to ask your insurer what they’ll be basing your upcoming premiums on if you’re not commuting anymore like us.
