I need some tires for my '07 9-5, and the shop is recommending Westlake SA07 tires (C$155), based on price and tread life rating (and he mentioned how good and deep the tread is, like that is some kind of scientific examination, lol). Also offered an alternative of Laufenn SFit AS ($178), another tire I've never heard of but he said is made by Hankook.

Time was I would spend quite a bit on tires and get Tirerack top rated tires like Continental Pro Contacts, but those are C$280 a tire, and I'm in the stage of my life where I drive more or less like a life insurance salesman. I am not looking for racing type performance, but I don't want tires that are going to have so much less grip that I am more likely to get into a crash.

Any suggestions for tires that are closer in price to the no-names but a better value? Would anyone actually take those no (or lesser) name brands?

Another place quoted me some Chinese made tire, name I cannot recall other than it started with S and is somehow affiliated with Cooper tires, but it's not one of the brands they list as owning. The Laufenn tires are made in Indonesia. Last time I bought tires, it was still easy to find tires made in a developed country, so that makes me kind of sad.
