I was always very interested in the pancake wheel motors, like used in the mini prototype, and a Volvo recharge prototype. I think the company behind those is now called Protean, though there may be others in that space now. Incredible power and torque with regenerative braking directly integrated, removing lots of function from the engine bay. I seriously thought it would have eclipsed what Tesla was doing. There must have been some downside that prevented their wider adoption. Many prototypes (even a ford f150) but not much uptake in the market. I recall seeing something that indicated Saab's ev program was testing the system also. So it is maybe not a big surprise to see wheel motors in this new demo car. If I can find it, I will add a link.
In terms of whether this car ever will reach market in North America or is good in other respects like Saabs of the past, well, I'm not going to get my hopes up.
