You're in luck, used car prices have plunged the last couple of months and are getting back to normal. I agree that the Subarus mentioned are a good choice, but they are both considered crossovers. That and sport utes are what everyone wants so you'll get a lot less bang for the buck. A better choice would be either a Legacy or an Imprezza. A Honda Accord would also be something to look at. About the same size as a 9-5(also a Sedan) and would come close in terms of how they drive. They made some performnace varients that would fall in your price range. Prevoius generation Civics (from '22 back to ?) are surprisingly roomy, come with a sweet 1.5 turbo, and can be had with a manuel trans and hatchback. Equivalent Toyotas are very good but not as much fun to drive. The other Japanese makes are mostly "also rans" in terms of relibility, though there may be exceptions--your results may vary.
There's always Volvos. I've had them, love them but they've never been a cheap date when it come to adventures in the maintanence department. VWs have some of that European feel (though not as much of late) but aren't much cheaper to own then Audis. I'd take a chance a Golf, but nothing else. I have no idea what they're trying to do these days.
