No quibbles about your post; a few additional notes on prices and Saab's lineup.
--The 9000 by the end of its run had become a *very* expensive car that sold very few units. The 9-5 hit the US market extremely well equipped for thousands less than the 9k, with an entry price at just under $30k (cloth 5-sp w/ no sunroof, but everything else included). This was an amazing car for the money, with no real direct competition. At the same time they tried to establish Saturn-like "no haggle" pricing. This didn't seem to last too long.
Saab was rewarded with 9-5 sales several times that of the 9k.
--I believe the 9-3's pricing really muddies the waters. It completely straddles the 9-5--being both cheaper and more expensive. It does that with what in the public's mind is one engine--the turbo 4. Does anybody but a Saab fan understand the engine differences? I've always thought that somehow Saab needed to have a 9-5 that was more expensive than the 9-3 convert, making the 9-5 Saab's unambiguous flagship. This is one compelling reason for having an HPT V6 AWD Autobahn eater.
In the meantime, everybody knows you can deal on Saabs, most are leases and not sales. We all await the 9-3's replacement and some sort of sports car, or very high-performance sedan (and not the SUV we keep being threatened with).
