I attended a meeting about a year back between the New Jersey BMW Owners Club and BMW's US management staff. A number of owners raised the oil change interval issue with BMW's management staff. The management staff swore by BMW's computerized system that monitored the engine to determine when to change the oil. One of the owners commented that BMW's management probably wouldn't be all that sensitive to this issue since they got new cars every 1-3 years as an employee perk. I agree that using dino oil much beyond 5,000 mile is a bit like playing Russian Roulette with your engine if you have any intention of keeping the car much beyond 50,000 miles or so.
