The Saab Network, on behalf of its many Aero owning members, successfully lobbied ICANN for the creation of the .aero domain. In addition to the familiar .com, .net, .org etc names, users can now register domain names ending in .aero.
"It's about time the Internet naming organizations recognized that Saab owners are the most active Internet users of any car owner group," said Scott Paterson, TSN moderator. "Now many Saab owners will be able to register their personal car domains such as, toms9000.aero and ilovemysaab.aero."
Although other submissions were turned down, such as .classic900, .ng900, .spg, and .viggen, Esther Dyson, outgoing chairwoman of ICANN, said, "This is only an initial sampling, proof of concept. The ones that we accepted, we have faith that they are good and solid and will provide additional utility and maintain the stability, and meet all the criteria, but they are probably not the only ones that would have qualified."
