One point, from an earlier NINES, was that eventually, SAAB will get the new GM 4, modified, and there won't be a 'SAAB' engine. MFG costs down. The V6 is that way, even the big Saturn uses it.
The 9-3 is not the rigid cage that the 'classic' 900 was...It is structurally an Opel, and to save weight the sections are thinner. You'll prolly survive, but the car won't as readilly. An earlier (or maybe the same NINES) had a cross section comparison of the roof pillar of the old 900 and the 9000 - big diff. the 9-3 is closer to the 9000.
