Yeah JC, I believe you are right about Honda using GM V8's. To reciprocate, GM will use Honda engines in some future products, mostly in markets outside the USA. I also recently read that Isuzu will be making V6 diesels available to a number of manufacturers, including SAAB, due to the ever increasing popularity if diesels in Europe.
What a crazy business the auto industry has become. GM has agreements, for engines or technology of one sort or another, with Subaru, Fiat, Isuzu, Toyota (have I left any out?), and this in addition to the already existing GM affiliates like Holden, Vauxall, Opel, and our beloved SAAB. Some of these GM partners have their specific areas of expertise. Lke SAAB's 4 cylinder and turbo engine technology, their safety technology, and the recent SVC and SCC developments. GM provided Isuzu with development funds for diesel development, leading to Isuzu's new line of diesel powrerplants. Subaru with its 4-wheel drive system. And so on.
SAAB's history has often included making use of other maunfacturers' engines, hasn't it? Such as use of Ford V4's in the 96 (I think). So I don't worry all that much about it. For the most part, I don't think SAAB will simply "drop in" an existing GM engine (except perhaps in diesel models). My understanding is that SAAB will use the basic engine block and the have the freedom to develop it with their own turbo and engine technology for use in SAAB cars.
God only knows what variety of mixed source components will wind up in GM's wide range of future products. We all hope that SAAB will survive with its character intact (most of it, anyway). And the current management, Peter Anguuston (sorry if I spelled it wrong) and the newly hired Michael Mauer as chief of design/styling seem determined to make it happen. So let's give them the chance to do it. It's not like we have a choice anyway.
As John Prine once said.."It's a big old goofy world.......and getting goofier all the time".
