There were always reasons for folks to complain that some SAABs are not real SAABs -- consider this. The original SAAB 92 used a DKW two stroke engine. DKW, Auto Union, Audi is the lineage of one of SAAB's main competitors. Follow this link to learn more:

The SAAB 96 V4 was equipped with a West German Ford V4 engine(Original US Ford Cardinal design). SAAB has never had an "original" motor in any of its cars. The SAAB 99 engine was a Recaro Engineering (English firm and was based on a Coventry Climax racing engine if memory serves me well) design built by Triumph. The Triumph Stag V-8 was the complete engine from which the SAAB inline 4 was co-produced. This is the engine from which the current 4 cylinder evolved. SAAB owners in those days could hardly have complained about the influence of those companies who contributed to the SAAB product because without them SAAB may not have been a success. By the way, I believe that steering wheels and other steering parts have been supplied by GM Saginaw since the SAAB 99.
