I found this info on http://www.fastlane.com.au/frnews.htm
I just copy the info from the page

New seat belt reminder system could halve road crash fatalities

"Saab is developing an advanced seat belt reminder system that could help reduce the number of road crash deaths by up to 50 per cent.

What makes Saab’s prototype system better than conventional symbol-only reminder systems in a car’s instrument panel is an audio signal, that works in conjunction with the illuminated warning symbol to remind front seat occupants to fasten their seat belts.

A low frequency signal begins once the vehicle exceeds 15 km/h to remind occupants to fasten their seat belts, with the signal frequency increasing as road speed increases.

One of the most important factors in avoiding fatalities in road crashes is to ensure that occupants have their seat belts fastened.

Saab’s own extensive and thorough crash investigations in Sweden reveal that 50 per cent of those killed in car accidents did not wear a seat belt. This high percentage is confirmed by other independent crash studies.

"We would obviously be unable to save all lives, but we consider that half of the unbelted occupants would not have met their end had their seats belts been fastened," said Christer Nilsson, safety engineer at Saab Automobile.

"Studies aimed at finding out why car occupants failed to use their seat belts showed that 80 per cent had merely ‘forgotten’ to fasten their seat belts and would not have objected to being given a reminder."

The advanced seat belt warning system was shown in prototype form on a Saab 9-5 Estate at a recent Swedish safety seminar.

The prototype system was developed by Saab Automobile in co-operation with numerous Swedish organisations - the Institute of Design at Umea University, the National Road Administration, and the National Federation of Swedish Insurance Companies.

Saab is working on an even smarter and improved advanced seat belt warning system for future model Saab cars. Currently, all Saab cars are fitted with one of the leading symbol-only seat belt reminder systems available".

Merry christmas to all
