Tauruses tend to be very good buys on the used car market because so many of them go out on promotional leases. Typical Taurus lease of a few years ago was 24 months @$199/mo. Almost all were returned (as opposed to being bought out for cash at end of term) because residuals, and thus purchase option prices, were so high. Thus a large supply of clean, lease return Tauruses. I would definitely favor a lease returning little old lady Taurus versus an ex- Hertz rental. (Hertz is owned by Ford.) The rental cars get lots of maintenance between uses, but, well, i know how I drive them when I rent them! Carfax will provide insight as to history of a specific car.
For similar reasons there are always lots of lease return SAABs available. Most SAABs are "sold" on promotional leases.
Speaking of Fords, I'll bet you could get a hell of a deal on a Ford Explorer with Firestone tires.
