Exhaust Manifold Cracks

I have a 1989 saab 900 Turbo 8 and it has several cracks in the exhaust manifold.
The only noticeable effect is a loud ticking noise when the manifold is cold, but as the manifold heats up and expands, the cracks seal up and the noise disappears.
Do you know what will happen if I do not get it repaired/replaced? Will the cracks get bigger and could it damage the engine?
Thanks Clive
