Not your typical spark plug question.

A gal at work has been telling me for sometime that her 1991 Ford Ranger PU (4-cylinder) has two sets of plugs. Finally today I had a look for myself, and she is right! Two distributors, eight plugs! One set must be a bitch to change. They are behind/under the alternator and intake manifold.
Why would Ford do this? For driving in northern Siberia? Mounting wings and turning it into an airplane? Is it just another "better idea" from Ford?
