Aussies pay bigger bucks for Saabs.
Americans would do well to consider buying here.
I don't keep track of prices as I should but with 6800 km on our '99 9-3 base demo (sunroof, air conditioning, auto, leather) our price was (US-equiv at Friday's exchange rate) $22K + 7% tax so you can compare.
I am aware Euros pay far, far more taxes for transportation at every level of user interface. I am also aware your emissions profile is far, far better than ours. Here, we subsidize the trucking industry heavily by failing to pass along the true cost of keeping a road system for them. Hence, it's my belief that rail is under-utlitzed. As well, we have no idea what the true cost of the transportation component of climate change will be. There's talk of a carbon tax but any politician who mentions it is bound to be thought of as scary and un-electable. People have come to regard their vehicles as a right.
Thankfully, there have been moves to cut sales of SUVs. Rollover rates recently hit the news. Even there, a political party would take a huge political penalty to pass along the true cost of ownership in taxes or other penalites. One insurance company, sensing trucks and SUVs are taking about 50% of the market, is going after their business by offering them lower premiums, even though they tend to kill and maim the people in the cars they hit at a far higher rate than cars hitting other cars.
