Study: Motorists Who Use Cell Phones Are More Likely To Have Accidents
MONTREAL (AP) -- Motorists who drove while using a cellphone were more likely to have an accident than other drivers, a study released Wednesday suggested.
The study indicated cellphone users faced a 38 per cent higher risk of having an accident when compared with non-users.
The risk doubled among heavy users -- those who made more than 135 calls a month, suggested the study of 36,000 participants in Quebec, including 12,000 phone users.
Prof. Urs Maag, a road-safety researcher who helped carry out the study for the University of Montreal over the past two years, said it's difficult to concentrate on driving and talking at the same time.
``You can drive and chew gum, that's no problem because chewing gum is not a demanding activity for the brain,'' Maag told a news conference Wednesday.
``But having a complicated telephone conversation can be, depending on how stressful the conversation is.''
Maag said pushing small buttons can also require a lot of concentration.
Another recent study suggested that drivers who used cellphones were four times as likely to be involved in a collision as those who didn't.
Some of the countries that have banned the use of hand-held or hands-free cellphones while driving include Australia, Britain, Finland, Italy, South Africa and Spain.
