Can anyone tell me what is happening at Saab, IMHO the company risks becoming a rudderless oil-tanker slowly making its way to the rocks? Here is why I think so:
1/ It has recently been revealed that the 9-5 is to be facelifted, WHY? Facelifts are hardly ever successful and the 9-5 is already gorgeous so to me its kinda like giving Marilyn Munroe a boob-job, you're just messing with something that does not need messing with! TRANSLATION: Huge waste of scarce money!
2/ Why is it taking an eon to bring out the new 9-3? Rather than deal with
point #1 I think resources would be better spent on improving the chances for the new 9-3 to "kick ass" against the likes of Audi's new, admittedly drop-dead gorgeous,A4 due out this summer (not NEXT summer 2002) and the equally gorgeous C-Class from MB. Wake up guys, this project has been on the drawing board WAY too long!
3/ Why do we need a Saab SUV, I think the market needs a Saab 9-5X (my chosen name for an AWD 9-5 wagon) !!!??? I have been reading that Saab hopes to sell 30000 of the new SUV, uh, get real!
4/ Why has Saab dropped the Viggen in all markets except US and Canada? Why did Saab spend huge amounts of money on a car that they were only going to sell for a few years in a few markets? BTW I think the Viggen is one of the hottest looking cars on the road and wish I could afford to own one (WHY DID THEY DROP THE LIGHTNING BLUE COLOUR?)!!!!
Having said the above, there are many good things that I think Saab can look forward to as well like the new engine technology being introduced i.e SVC. I am certain that Saab is onto something BIG here and it wont be long before other companies make use of this technology making Saab big bucks in the process. Saab has a new designer who has clearly stated conservative Saabs will be a thing of the past, the new 9-5 is set to be bigger and even better that the current model and Im sure this guy will give us a new "Sonnett" in the future.
As long as GM lets Saab do what Saab has always done best which is, IMO, design and produce cars that are a little different but not too different so to scare off Joe Average, then the future is definitely "rosy as hell"!!!
QUESTION: Can anybody tell me where Bjorn Envall went to, he was the guy who designed the 9000 and I believe the original 900?
