Both times I've been pulled over recently for speeding, I got a warning,
and it was obvious a detector was in use. The last time was when I first
got my Viggen. The officer was entertained at how well he suprised me and
how well I was able to slow down. He commented that that the nose dive and
brake lights are a dead giveaway, and I told him he did a good job getting
me (instant on) and that I wasn't in a hurry, just wasn't watching the
speedometer well. (And I made sure to mention that I looked behind me
before stomping on the brakes)
If I'm on the highway and get some sudden radar detection and the roads
are dry and clean, I have been known to let off the gas and use the
emergency brake smoothly to slow down if you don't want to show brake
lights or nose dive. It's not as fast as regular brakes, but unless you
were being really stupid, cutting off a few miles per hour is all that's
necessary to make the difference between a ticket and a warning, or
the difference between getting pulled over or not.
If you are going real fast and get pulled over and have a detector,
they might try to teach you a lesson and write a ticket. It's a risk you
take if you go 15+ over the limit. A nice detector helps you to reduce
the risk, but it's still a risk.
