For cultural flavor and happiness, I'd put these on my list:
Austin, TX- great culture. Happy people, good food, very much alive.
Madison, WI- The quintessential American city.
Albuquerque, NM- Modern, up to date, and alive. Beautiful area.
For best places to drive a Saab? I'd say that Detroit wouldn't actually be a horrible choice. Sure, the roads are terrible, but Saabs ride well and most don't rattle (much). But what I like is the area around Troy and Birmingham. Lots of nice small, wooded country-like roads to explore and lots of nice wide roads. Michigan Us are pointless, but Detroit is a great city for car people. Just don't spend much time inside 10-Mile...lol
I'd also vote for Phoenix and Tucson. It's hot in the summer, but it's beautiful. Great desert roads to escape to.
