Tara,
A better place to ask this might be the 9000 board, but here's the short version:
The 2.0l engine was used until '91. It is extremely reliable with many going well over 200k before needing any sort of internal work.
In '91 Saab switched to the 2.3l in the 9000. This is also an excelent motor that is more powerful and makes more torque at a much lower RPM. The 2.3l also features balance shafts and is a bit smoother. The problem you may have heard about relates to the timing/balance chain in these engines. In '91 and possibly some of '92 the engines did not have a hardened timing sprocket which can wear prematurely. The chain causes major engine damage if it breaks. If you are looking at a '91, check to see if it has had the timing chain and sprocket replaced. If so, updated components will have been used and there should be no problems. The 2.3l engine generally requires more timing chain attention and has certain other minor problems not associated with the 2.0l (such as DI cassette failure) but is still a very robust engine and generally considered superior for most purposes.
Aside from the engine, the '91-92 cars feature a firmer, lower suspension and 16" wheels as well as a slightly revised nose (like that of earlier CD models.) Many consider this the most sporting 9000 beside the Aero. In '93 Saab introduced the newer "rounder" body style which some prefer. This style continued relatively unchanged (with the notable exception of a stronger manual gearbox in '94) until '98.
I hope this helps.
Craig
