Roger,
First I would try 3M brand car liquid polish in the black bottle. It has a note on the front about being able to polish out scratches from 1500 grit or finer sand paper. Yes that is 1,500 grit. It is a VERY low abrasion polish.
I use 2000 grit and follow with polish. If it is just the clear coat you can polish it out. If it has reached the paint, then you are into 2 stage work with color and clear coats (for adventuresome types only. or paint shops). Actually that isn't all that hard, it just takes time and patience.
