My dad had a '91 that was faultless, in terms of reliability. It was before LCs got to be prestige products. (he paid about $25k... three years later they were over 40k!)
As I recall, he was very unimpressed with the brakes. They are not powerful enough to stop the vehicle easily. That was fixed later, but I think it was about '94. The I6 is not very powerful, and I think it was fixed later, too. If your budget stretches, look for a later model with the improved (I think they added ABS) brakes and the beefed up engine.
The LC is a tremendously good ride. It's strong, comfortable, and reasonably easy to drive, when compared to similar vehicles. They're stellar off road, too, with their solid axles and diff locks... please take advantage of its abilities!!!
Also, do you REALLY need an SUV? A wagon is more fun to drive on road and can solve a lot of these issues. A Mercedes or Volvo wagon of similar vintage will be reliable and somewhat fun.
