Many years ago, 22 years old and driving on McGrath and Obrien highway near the Science Museum. Ran out of gas. Pulled off to side of road. Put on flashers and went to get gas at a gas station about four blocks away. Came back with gas can full of gas and poured it in. Then realize I have locked myself out of car - I can see the keys in the ignition. I consider myself lucky - the car did not get stolen because I had been smart enough to put those straight plastic pulls on the interior door locks, so that you could not just insert a wire loop through the window seal and pull up the lock. Now, of course, I cannot do the same (even if I had a coat hanger wire).
Cops pull up and I (somewhat painfully) explain the situation. They ask if I go to MIT - those kids are always doing something stupid. Ha, Ha. No, I'm just a working stiff. They stop a tow truck and get the driver to unlock the door with a jimmy - no charge. Takes all of three seconds. Cops joke about stupid locks those kids from MIT are always putting on their cars thinking it stops car thieves.
Try to start car. Cranks over several times as gas races up fuel line to engine. Then battery dies. Emergency flashers and repeated cranking have killed it. Open hood to look engine over but can't come to any other conclusions. Cops (laughing hysterically) offer to jump me, but not on side of road - they will push me over to a cinder parking lot under a bridge. OK - I get in the car, roll window down, and yell "Ready". Peals of laughter. Finally one cop regains enough composure to say "You might see where you're going if you put the hood down". I get out of the car, put the hood down, get back in and get pushed off to the parking lot, where cops jump start me and all is well. "Wait till we tell the guys back at the station", they kept saying.
What if I HAD gotten into MIT?
