More Power to Challenge the M3 & RS4, the S60R and V70R!
Volvo is testing higher-powered versions of the S60 saloon and V70 estate, designed to take on the BMW M3 and Audi RS4. Likely to be badged S60R and V70R, these are the production models inspired by the Volvo S60 Performance Concept Car (PCC) of two years ago. That particular car had an uprated version of the 2.4-liter, five-cylinder turbo engine, producing 300 bhp and around 295 lb.ft of torque, a six-speed manual gearbox, Haldex all-wheel drive, lowered active chassis suspension, and large 18-inch multi-spoke alloys with low-profile tires. It looks as if these features have made it on to the production S60R as well as recently available Bi-Xenon headlights.
The large front air intake on the S60R gives some indication as to this car's potential power, as does the fact that the test drivers are wearing full sports harnesses, and that the cabin is reinforced with a full safety rollover cage: "very unusual for Death Valley", comments our photographer.
The V70 estate looks as if it has been similarly enhanced, and is pictured here doing powertrain and transmission durability testing in the hot temperatures of the Californian desert.
