The plant in Trollhatan has already been expanded, and what a grand facility it is. We were in Sweden in June for the Saab Festival in Trollhatan, and the International Convention in Finland. The systems that they are using in both countries are state of the art. We got to tour both the Valmet Plant in Finland that makes the 9-3 Convertible, Viggen and 9-3 Aero. As well as the Porsche Boxster.
In Sweden both the 9-3 and the 9-5 each have 2 lines running for about 15 hours a day. The cars arrive as rolls of steel and about 15 hours later roll out as a finished car.
The amount of automation is incredible, with robot arms everywhere welding is required. Thepeople that we saw did a few welding and painting jobs, but mostly they install the interiors into the cars. On top of that most of the workers on the line were around 23 years old, and 40% were women. The quality control is also handled by people and everyone on the line is actually encouraged to stop the line if there is something wrong with any car. The line also moved at a very slow pace so nothing seemed to be to hurried. The work atmosphere seemed to be nice, with break areas set aside and the outside of the factory is very open. One thing that really stood out was how clean everything looked, and well ventilated. There was no bad air even while going by the paint booths.
I wouldn't mind working at either factory, the whole area was very inviting. Especislly when you consider it is a factory.
