This organization might interest those of you who have been as frustrated as I have been because of the limited ways we can help out the victims of the recent attack on our country - The New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund, Inc.
I recently spoke to my cousin (a NY City Firefighter) when he was on a six-hour break from the rescue efforts to visit his family. His voice was very scratchy from all of the dust, and his eyes were swollen and red - but I don't think that was only from the dust. As he looked down at hands that more resembled hamburger meat than palms and fingers (I think he was less concerned with his hands than he was with keeping his emotions in check) he told me of an organization that he regularly donates to - The New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund, Inc.
He mentioned that ALL of the money donated goes to the families because all of the people administering the fund are volunteers.
I was able to find an article of the New York Mets web-site that gives more information - here's the URL
http://mets.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/nym/news/nym_news_story.jsp?article_id=nym_20010915_metsstoryb_news&team_id=nym
My family has made a donation. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
