89 900 S overheating

Don't mean to bother anyone but if someone could answer a question from a guy that just bought 86 & 89 900 S's Saabs I would appreciate.
First stupid question: No noticible fluid leaking. The 89 (4cyl/auto w/air)was running great then noticed the temp gauge rising toward hot...parked the car and shut it off and noticed that the cooling fans did not initiate as normal..also restarted the car and saw that the fans were not running immediately and that they came on then shut down after a short time...any ideas and cab these two scenarios cause the high temp?
Any response would be greatly appreciated...
Best regards,
Richard
