I lived with a '96 Miata for 2 years and sold it to get my '94 9k because my wife insisted that I have something for the kids to ride in. :( The Miata is IMHO the perfect sports car if absolute speed isn't your top priority. Ride is good, handling is on rails, shifter is perfect, power is decent enough stock (and can be stupid lots with just a few $$ for a turbo kit -- there are reliable, daily driven 250+ HP Miatae out there). An autocrosser's dream, and in the hands of a moderately skilled pilot can terrorize much more expensive and higher-powered cars on the open track. Very, very cheap to own, nearly impossible to break. In the 2 years I had mine I put about 50k miles on it driving it like I stole it, and all I did was change fluids, brake pads and tires. And though it may be small, I'm 6'2" about 200# and I fit just fine with a small seat modification, and was able to make shopping trips to the warehouse club with no problems if I took the spare out. A used Miata in decent shape can be had very reasonably - the early cars in decent shape with relatively high miles can be had for in the $1k range if you are willing to do a little inexpensive work on them to bring them up to snuff. Uh, I think I really loved and miss my Miata! Check out http://www.miata.net - probably the absolute best single-model car site on the web (sorry, TSN is great, but there's over 10,000 members at Miata.net!). And keep working on the Wife - took over 2 years to convince mine that it was an OK thing to do.
