Yeah, I did the 2nd PC thing. I didn't go the Linux route, but instead installed Win98SE on a small "BookPC." Stuck a DVD drive in it, plugged the s-video out into the receiver, and now it's part of the stereo system. It's pretty damned neat, 'cause with a Celeron 600 CPU (read, "cheap ass CPU") it's fast enough to decode DiVX. Which means I can watch 'em on TV instead of on the PC.
The setup is:
ECS BKi810 PC ($150)
Celeron 600 CPU ($50)
256megs RAM ($15 - woohoo!)
12gig IBM Travelstar 2.5" HDD ($70)
Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM ($80)
KeySpan USB Remote (don't remember!)
If I could just get ethernet over to it I could update it remotely instead of using CDs... unfortunately it's too far away... :( Regardless, it's great at parties - 12gigs of MP3s is a *lot*. :)
