The Saab/Caddy/Alfa trio is interesting -- Swedish practicality, traditional American luxobarges (nicely updated -- see Deville DTS and upcoming Catera replacement), and Italian passion, all at one dealership, is an interesting thought.
I don't think they intend to make them closer in terms of parts and cars, only in terms of dealer groupings and strategy. Kind of like Ford with their Premium Car division (Jaguar, Volvo, Aston Martin).
I don't like the "mainstreaming" of Saab. I think that, no matter how "quirky" a Saab is, if the product itself is a great product it will sell. Saab's recent problems stem not from quirkiness but lack of a broad range of quality products that are market leaders (or at least, top 2 in their market). They are taking steps to remedy that with possible new entry level cars (9-2?), crossovers, 9X type products, new 9-3, etc.
The 9-5 is a great product that is selling well; the 9-3 *was* a great product that is quickly becoming outclassed and a bit dated in a crowded market (I just bought a Viggen, though.....). Predictably, Saab is piling on lease deals and incentives to move the moldy 9-3 products.
The new 9-3 is really the bellweather for where Saab is going. They need to nail that car right on the money when it comes out, or the fickle market will barely notice it and turn to the many other alternatives in the $25K-$35K range.
