Caltech is an excellent opportunity. I took Aerospace classes there years ago as JPL (NASA'S Jet Propulsion Laboratory) is about fifteen minutes away. Caltech is the MIT of the West and has strong NASA ties.

As with most universities, check into student housing resources to find local apt./houses/rooms for rent. There are some very reasonable aptartments in that area - which I would recommend. The area South of Colorado, East of Orange Grove Blvd., North of Huntington Drive and West of Rosemead Blvd. would be ideal as you could walk or <5 minute drive to Caltech. With your C900 Saabs avoiding a long commute in the dry, desert-like So. California weather is key. Traffic in So. Cal can cause the temp. guage on the best C900 to rise into the red zone quite quickly. The areas EDG mentioned are fine as well, but I'd hesitate going beyond the 15 mile range. As far as other cost of living factors: grocery - 1gal milk $2.25, gas - $1.45 89octane, dining - $7.00-$100+ depending on taste and appetite;-)

Few questions:

Single or family?
A one bedroom can be from $600-$900 vs. 2-3 bedroom $900+

How long do you lan on being in So. Cal?
Leases can be negotiated by length required

Monthly/Yearly budget?
Obviously makes evrything happen.
