Ijust had a 2001 Maxima as a rental car in L.A. It has been on my list of cars to drive around the time my 9-3 lease comes up. In all likelihood I'll keep the 9-3, or find a used 9000 Aero, Viggen, or 9-5. But, to be fair, I'll drive the competition and make up my mind.

Anyway, I was quite impressed with the Maxima engine. It was the 2001, so the HP should have been in the 220 or 225 range, IIRC. Good get up and go, even through a slushbox.

The Good:
Engine - nice smooth power, I see why it gets such good reviews
Brakes - Touchier than I like, but very effective
Controls on the Wheel - Radio controls on the wheel are a great feature - safety and convenience
Awesome Rear Leg Room for the size of car.
Cupholders

The Bad:
Seats - not very comfy
The label inside the door said weight was 4000lbs+, so why do the doors sound like they weigh 5 pounds when I close them? Has the cheap Japanese look, feel and sound in terms of materials and build quality.
Notchback
Space between trunk and rear seats is small, can't haul anything big
Auto Dimming Mirror - man, those things irritate me
Dash - what's with sloping forward? You have to lean for controls

The Ugly:
Tail End
Tail Lights
The dings and scratches - Don't expect a cherry when getting a rental car at midnight on the busiest travel day of the year!

Bottom line:
The Maxima is a fun car to drive. I bet the new 255HP 6-Speed Manual is a blast. But from a utility, safety, and seat comfort perspective, I'll keep my Saab!
