Here's a hint. Cars go around and round, Fans get to see the cars for just about the whole race. Sometimes cars get banged up a bit,or a whole lot. Go behind wall, get fixed. Come out to race again, so fans get to see them some more.Sponsors, whose names are emblazoned across the sides of the cars, also get some more air time. About 40 cars in race. On any given day, probably three quarters of them could win, but most of the time, you will not know who till the last turn.
Fans get to root for their favorite, because the fact is that their favorite could actually be competetive and win the race and the championship.
Now,let's compare that to Formula One. Start with budget, then throw it away, just spend whatever you have to to keep up. Ferrari spent about $280 million last season to field two cars. Probably will do so again this season, but perhaps more since they are developing a totally new and apparently revolutionary car. Michael qualifies first,no one else in the ball park. Michael wins race. Nobody even passes him, except perhaps during the pit stops. God forbid that they actually were to pass on the track. That would be a news story. Finishing order pretty much determined by begining of season budgets. Ferrari first,Minardi last. In between will be McLaren, Williams, Jordan Renault,Arrows,Prost( if they can get bailed out, Toyota, etc. etc.
I guess this is my way of saying that the reason why Nascar works is that it is a show, which is what all entertainment is,A SHOW. Nascar realizes this, and puts on a great one most weeks. When is the last time you could watch a FormulaOne race and reasonably expect the Arrows to pass the Williams on the last lap after swaping the lead every lap? It's not going to happen anytime soon. Perhaps the new Formula One that is likely to start in 2007 will change that, but there is no guarantee of that, since the thing driving that is more money for the teams, not a sincere desire to be more competetive.
I have been to about 25 of these events in my life, but could not imagine going back till they try to turn them into an auto race.
