Flying to Pasadena for job interview, where to look...

I appreciated the responses that I got last month when I posted that I'm considering moving to the LA area (from Atlanta) for a job at CalTech in Pasadena. This Sunday I'm flying into LA airport for an interview for Monday and Tuesday. I'm renting a car to drive around and explore the area. I'm very interested in this potential job but if I have any chance of taking it I'm going to have to convince the wife that we can afford to live there. Since the job is academic it's not going to pay all that well, but the experience will be quite good.
So, I'll have a map of course, and a friend of my sister-in-law that lives in LA to help, but I want some advice of areas to check out. I want to be able to rent a house or at least a townhouse and I don't mind commuting. I'll be looking at certain areas that you guys mentioned before when I asked, but I wanted to once again ask for suggestions. I plan on the wife and new baby (yikes!) on staying at home so the area needs to be relatively nice and safe. I'd also appreciate any advice on where to look for rentals, i.e. LA Times, smaller local papers, realtors, etc. I should have most of the day on Sunday and Tuesday to drive around.
Thanks,
Wes Lindsey
