Hi Mike!
I'm Chris - and live in Sydney. I have just bought an '85 900 Turbo Aero (which is what you guys call the SPG) for AU$6,500 (US$3,200) with 245,000kn (153,000 miles) on the clock. It is in near NEW condition - inside and out. It also has the full Exclusive Appointment accessories - leather seats, electric sun roof, 3-spoke wheels, aero kit, etc. I've emailed some pictures to you. Saab enjoys a fairly wide following over here - with nearly every model available. My wife is currently looking at a 89 900 EMS (16-valve) with sun roof, and all the bits for about AU$3,500 (US$1,600) with as little as 90,000 miles on it. We have an 81 GLi (8-valve) which we bought with 8 months rego on it for US$250.
There are a fair few here, but don't get the impression that this is the USA. We have less than one tenth of your population - but then again we, as a nation, really took to Saabs here in the mid to late 70's - and there are plenty around. Not many are advertised - but if you go to http://www.tradingpost.com.au and look under cars - Saab you will get a good idea.
Insurance -at least for turbo's is pricey - I'm paying AU$1,100 per year for an 85! And I'm 39! Still - with your yankee dollar - it might all seem worthwhile...
Cheers
ChrisM
