The original story dose have some true points, but as a whole is a piece of fiction made to entertain foreigners.
Regarding this message I'm replying to:
- cherokees are not neraly popular now as they were before. Those who can afford an SUV, get japanese ones. Although you certainly can see Navigators, Excursion, and even Hummers;
- as for the dramatically increased import tarrifs, most Russians see this as a protectionst measure to keep afloat the failing Russian domestic car makers -- they will now be able to rise prices for the crap they produce, and keep selling it;
- saabs are known as good winter cars in Russia (ask me how I know :), however, stories abobut fire under engine block date either back to times when there were no real winter engine oil available on the market, or to regions that get really cold winter. In both cases this is an emergency measure, and nobody would leave the fire overnight. And by the way, in regions with really cold winter they just don't shut down the engine for as long as the temps are down -- weeks, months -- otherwise it would be nearly impossible to start it, even if it's a Saab.
